Bariatric surgery may curtail colorectal cancer risk

Key clinical point: After bariatric surgery, obese adults may have the same risk of colorectal cancer as nonobese adults in the general population.

Major finding: Obese patients who did not undergo bariatric surgery had a 34% higher risk of colorectal cancer compared with the general population, but the risk in obese patients who underwent surgery was similar to the risk in the general population.

Study details: A retrospective study of 1,045,348 obese adults aged 50-75 years.
