Readmission Rates After Surgery for POP
Female Pelvic Med Reconstr Surg; ePub 2017 Jan 6; Hokenstad, et al
For patients undergoing surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP), both readmission and reoperation rates are relatively low, a recent study found. The cohort included 23,419 patients who underwent surgery for POP from 2012 through 2014. Researchers found:
- There were 435 (1.9%) readmissions and 341 (1.5%) reoperations within 30 days (median days were 9 and 8 days, respectively).
- Patients readmitted had higher American Society of Anesthesia (ASA) scores, longer operative times, and longer length of stay than those not readmitted; this was also true for patients who underwent unplanned reoperation.
- The most common reasons for readmission were surgical site infection (SSI) and non-SSI; for reoperation was urologic such as cystoscopy or stent replacement.
