Oral contraceptive use associated with smaller hypothalamic and pituitary volumes

Key clinical point: The hypothalamic volume of women taking oral contraceptives was about 6% smaller than naturally cycling women.

Major finding: Volumes of both the hypothalamus and pituitary were lower in women taking OCs compared with naturally cycling women (P = .006 and .007, respectively).

Study details: Prospective study using MRI and neurocognitive testing in 21 women on OCs and 29 naturally cycling women.
