Choice of infant sleep location is multifactorial

Key clinical point: Despite expert recommendations promoting room-sharing but not bed-sharing for the first 6 months of life, most mothers don’t follow this advice, according to a recent nationally representative study.

Major finding: Fewer than half of mothers surveyed (45%) practiced – and also had the intent to practice – room-sharing without bed-sharing, while about a quarter of respondents (24%) who originally said they did not intend to practice bed-sharing actually did share the bed with their infants all or part of the night.

Study details: A nationally representative survey of 3,260 mothers with infants aged 2-6 months.

Disclosures: Dr. Kellams and associates reported no relevant financial disclosures. The study was funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institutes of Health.
