‘Substantial burden’ of enterovirus meningitis in young infants
Key clinical point: In infants less than 90 days old, the incidence of enterovirus/human parechovirus meningitis was more than twice that of bacterial meningitis and more than fivefold higher than that of group B streptococcal meningitis, the No. 1 cause of bacterial meningitis in early infancy.
Major finding: The incidence of enterovirus meningitis was 0.79 per 1,000 live births, and the incidence of human parechovirus meningitis was and 0.04 per 1,000 live births,
Study details: An analysis of all 668 cases of laboratory-confirmed enterovirus and 35 cases of human parechovirus meningitis in infants less than 90 days old seen by pediatricians in the United Kingdom and Ireland during a 13-month period.
