Novel coronavirus may cause environmental contamination through fecal shedding

Key clinical point: The toilet bowl, sink, and bathroom door handle of an isolation room housing a patient with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) tested positive, raising the possibility that viral shedding in the stool could represent another route of transmission.

Major finding: Positive samples were found in 13 of 15 room sites (87%) and 3 of 5 toilet sites (60%).

Study details: A report on three patients housed in airborne infection isolation rooms in a dedicated SARS-CoV-2 outbreak center in Singapore.

Disclosures: Funding for the study came from the National Medical Research Council in Singapore and DSO National Laboratories. The study authors reported having no conflicts of interest.
