Botulinum toxin associated with antidepressant effects across indications, injection sites

Key clinical point: Botulinum toxin may be an effective antidepressant independent of the indication it is being used for and the injection site.

Major finding: Injections of botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis, facial wrinkles, migraine prophylaxis, spasticity, and spasms significantly reduced reports of depression and related adverse events, compared with a control group.

Study details: An analysis of 174,243 adverse event reports for botulinum toxin to the FDA between January 2004 and December 2019 and controls.
