J Cosmet Laser Ther; ePub 2016 Mar 10; Firooz, et al

A fractional Er:YAG laser can deliver an effective and minimally invasive treatment for acne scars, according to a small study involving 9 individuals.

Participants had Fitzpatrick skin types III and IV, plus atrophic facial acne scars. Investigators treated patients 2 to 5 times about 5 weeks apart. An independent evaluator made assessments using photographs both before and 1 month after treatment. Patient satisfaction was also measured. Among the results:

• Treatment was well tolerated, even without anesthesia.

• Patients reported 2 to 3 days of down time.

• All exhibited excellent to fair improvement in scars, with most showing fair improvement.

• 6 patients were highly satisfied and 3 were satisfied with treatment.

• No adverse effects were reported.
